Edgar is a popular given name in England, derived from the Anglo-Saxon moniker Eadgar, which comprises ead meaning “rich, prosperous” and gar meaning “spear”. It was seldom used during the late medieval era, like most Anglo-Saxon names, before regaining popularity a few centuries later.
One of the well-known early bearers of this name was Edgar the Peaceful, who ruled England from 959 until his passing in 975. He was the son of King Edmund I and his first wife Ælfgifu. While there were significant changes in the theological domain, the English Benedictine Reform, which he actively supported, became a dominating religious and social force. Edgar largely adhered to the political policies of his predecessors. This was accompanied by a literary and artistic flowering, primarily linked to Æthelwold, Bishop of Winchester, which historians view as a remarkable accomplishment.

The name began coming back in use in the 18th century, partly because of a novel by Walter Scott titled The Bride of Lammermoor.
