Origin, Meaning, And History of Emma
Emma is a feminine name derived from the Germanic word ‘ermen’ or ‘irmen’ meaning ‘whole’ or ‘universal.’ In Greek, Emma, meaning ‘blood,’ is a variant of Emmanuel. In Hebrew, the name stands for ‘all containing,’ ‘all-embracing (1)’ or ‘my God has answered.’ It is a diminutive of Amelia or Emmeline.
Historical usage
Emma is believed to have originally been a shorter version of longer names like Ermintrude (2). However, its earliest use can be traced back to the 7th century, when Emma of Austrasia, a member of the Austrasian royal family, was sometimes identified as Emma, who married the Eadbald of Kent. The name became much more popular in the medieval period after Emma of Normandy, who was queen of England, Denmark, and Norway as the wife of two kings, King Æthelred of England and Cnut the Great. Emma is also considered to be the protector of the scriptures, who helped in the translation of the Book of Mormon. She wrote careful verses and was Joseph’s first scribe (3).
The name also has strong literary connections and is repeatedly used by noteworthy English authors and poets. Emma Woodhouse is the title character in Jane Austen’s 1815 novel ‘Emma.’ Emma Frost is a character in the American comic books published by ‘Marvel Comics.’ This name also appears in the poem ‘Henry and Emma’ by Matthew Prior, published in 1709. Emma Geller Green appears in the popular television series ‘Friends’ as the baby daughter of Rachel and Ross.
Is Emma a Biblical name?
No. The name Emma is not specifically mentioned in the bible but is often perceived as a biblical name. This is because it is considered the feminine version of the Biblical name Emanuel, which means ‘God with us (4).’ So, if you are looking for a biblical name for your child, Emma might not fit the bill. However, Emma stands for wholeness and completeness, which gives it a spiritual aura.
Modern usage
Emma has been the top girl’s name in the US. It also appears in the list of top fashionable names starting with E, along with Ella, Eliza, and Eleanor. Emma is also a popular name in the UK as it has consistently featured among the top 100 baby girl names in the country for over a decade (5). Over the last 13 years, parents have chosen this simple yet elegant name for their baby girls in the US.
Such is the allure of the name Emma, and when middle-school teacher and blogger Kelly Larkin had to choose a name for her daughter, she just knew Emma was the most beautiful name for her precious princess. She says, “When I was a child, my favorite hobby was writing stories and publishing my own ‘books’ in a makeshift publishing press in my basement.
“Because of these little stories, I was totally obsessed with names, and the idea that one day, I might get to select a name for my own daughter …. When I got to freshman year of high school, I settled on “Emma” as my number one while going through a Jane Austen phase. Yes, I realize that Emma isn’t the most likable of Austen’s characters, but the name? Beautiful. Adorable for a little girl; mature and sophisticated for an adult. It was classic and timeless and… perfect. ‘Catherine,’ after my mother, would be my daughter’s middle name (i).” Kelly has chosen a timeless middle name for her Emma. Emma’s Zodiac Sign As Per Western Astrology
Western astrology includes the construction of a horoscope based on the person’s exact time of birth and location to understand the positions of the planet, stars, and zodiac signs at that time. However, in popular culture, it is often narrowed down to the sun sign, which depends on the person’s birth date. There are 12 zodiac signs, each having dominant traits, planetary rulers, elemental connection, and more.
Zodiac sign or Sun sign
The Earth’s orbit around the sun is divided into 12 zodiac signs covering 30-degree sectors. According to Western astrology, the zodiac or sun sign depends on the sun’s position in one of these sectors at the time of your birth. Starting from the sun’s position at the March equinox, the chart goes anti-clockwise from Aries, followed by Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. These signs are ruled by planetary bodies - Mars, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Sun, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Furthermore, they are categorized into triplicities or elemental signs - fire, water, air, and earth - that govern their characteristics. Each of these zodiac signs features certain personality traits that may determine how a person presents themselves.
Why the date of birth matters
Each zodiac sign in Western astrology is linked to a specific range of dates in the year. Unlike Vedic astrology, where names can sometimes be used to infer astrological details, Western astrology relies entirely on the birth date.
