The Key Parts Of The Human Heart

Imagine your heart as a magical pump hidden safely behind your ribcageiThe bones that protect the heart and lungs, forming a cage around them. , in your chest. It’s divided into four special rooms: two atria at the top and two ventricles at the bottom (1). These rooms work together like a team, passing blood around your body in an incredible relay race.

The right atriumiAnother name for the upper chambers of the heart.  catches blood returning from your body, hungry for oxygen. It then sends this blood to the right ventricle, which quickly pumps it to the lungs for an oxygen refill. The left atrium receives fresh, oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and passes it to the left ventricle. This powerful chamber then shoots the blood through the body’s largest highway, the aortaiThe largest artery in the body that carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body. , delivering life-giving oxygen everywhere.

Four special valves act like traffic controllers, ensuring the movement of blood in the right direction. The tricuspid and mitral valves guard the entrances to the ventricles, while the pulmonary and aortic valves control the exits. Two main veins – the superior and inferior vena cavae – bring blood back to the heart, and the pulmonary veins carry oxygen-rich blood from the lungs (2).
