How Does The US Government Work?

The United States Government is a federal structure established by the American Constitution in 1787. It operates on three levels—federal, state, and local— which ensures effective governance and order.

The Federal Government

  • The federal government is the highest level and is based in Washington, D.C.
  • This government is responsible for writing and enforcinglaws with the help of its three branches – the executive, legislative, and judicial.
  • The executive branch is led by the president, who serves for four years and oversees the administration.
  • This level of government can print currency, have talks with other countries,and send soldiers for battles in foreign countries.

The State Government

  • All 50 states have a state government modeled after the federal government.
  • They are responsible for writing and enforcing laws for people in their respective states.
  • The people of the respective states vote and elect a governor and other representatives for the smooth functioning of the state.
  • Each state has its state court,which hears appeals from lower-level courts.

The Local Government

  • The local government is divided into counties and localities and functions under the state government.
  • They look after schools, recreationalfacilities, fire departments, housing services, emergency medical services, and libraries.
  • They also construct and maintain roads, parks, sewagetreatment plants, etc.
  • Each local government is elected by the people of the respective counties or localities and consists of mayors and city councils.

These three branches, each with distinct roles to maintain order and justice, ensure democracy and the protection of citizens’ rights. Learning about the three branches of the US Government can help students understand how the government functions.
